Sri Sunandarama Purana Rajamaha Viharaya is a Buddhist temple with an ancient Tampita Viharaya belonging to the Kandyan era. The temple lies in the Wathuwaththa village just 4 km off Dummalasuriya and 15 km from Madampe.
A Tampita Viharaya is a building constructed on a wooden platform supported by several stone pillars, usually 3-4 feet high. Its roof is supported by a timber structure, and the walls are typically made of wattle and daub. Inside, the chamber walls are often adorned with paintings, primarily in the Kandyan style.
The Tampita Viharaya of the Wathuwaththa Sri Sunandarama Rajamaha Viharaya is built on 18 pillars. 10 of the pillars are made of brick and mortar and are plastered. The balance 8 pillars are made of stone. According to folklore, this temple was built by king Keerthi Sri Rajasinhe (1747 – 1781) as a wish granted to a villager of the Wathuwatta village. A wooden stair case is built to reach the wooden platform of the Tampita Viharaya. A narrow circumambulating path is built around the image house with a wider space at the front. A Hewisi Mandapaya has been built in front of the Tampita Viharaya and both roofs are thatched with flat clay tiles typical of buildings of the Kandyan era.
To reach the temple from Madampe, Take the Kurunegala road for 11 km to reach Dummalasuriya. After passing Kuliyapitiya Police Dummalasuriya, take the road towards Wathuwatta and travel for 2.5 km. Run left on to Wathuwatta road and travel 250 meters to reach the temple.
