Wattappola Ambalama stands as a testament to the historical significance of the ancient Kadugannava-Gampola road during the Kandy Kingdom period. Another ancient Ambalama associated with this road is located in Ambagasthanna Kurukuttala, further highlighting the importance of these resting places along ancient travel routes.

It is reported that the Ambalama in Wattappola village was constructed in 1918. According to inscriptions found at the Ambalama, it was built by a person named Wattappola Dingiri Banda Varakavulla.

The Udunuwara Wattappola Ambalama is constructed using granite blocks. It undergoes annual repairs, carried out by the descendants of the individual who originally built it. Currently, cement-treated lime has been applied over the black stone surfaces.
