Karuwalagaswewa lies 16km from Puttlam on the Anuradhapura road in the Tabbowa Wewa area. Galhatha is a jungle area in Karuwalagaswewa which is surrounded by seven natural rocks. This area is scattered with ancient ruins and drip-ledged caves. The inscriptions on these drip ledges have been dated to the 1st century BC to the 3rd century.

It has been presumed that a monastic complex has been in existence in the area consisting of seven rocks since the 1st century BC.  In addition to the drip ledge caves remains of a few stupas also can be seen on some of the summits of the rocks. A proper archaeological study in this area has not been done yet. With Wilandagoda monastic ruins, Erabadugaswewa monastic ruins,  Malasanagala archaeological site at Saliyawewa and many other ancient vihara complexes in the vicinity, it is assumed that this area had been a highly populated area in the ancient past.
