In the past, the Gin Ganga River played a vital role in facilitating the transportation of goods from the regions on both sides of the river to Galle. Goods were transported between the river ports and inland villages either by wagons or by human carriers.

Ambalams were constructed along these roads to provide respite for wagoners and villagers who were transporting goods, offering a safe haven for resting overnight and alleviating fatigue. Ambalams were also frequently situated near the piers, serving as essential resting places for travellers along these trade routes.

Thawalama Batahena Ambalama is one such rest stop constructed at a location where ferrymen and wagoners converged. It is believed that the area acquired the name “Thawalama” due to its association with caravans loading goods onto wagons.

A stone slab at the Ambalama indicates that it was erected in 1915 by an individual named Don Cornelis Wijesekara Vedaarachi, with the assistance of the local villagers.

This Ambalama is made of two parts. Wide ledges are built around the walls of the porch like the front part as well as the rear room which is separated by a partition wall. stone slabs have been laid on the ledge of the porch like part of the Ambalama.

To reach Batahena Junction, one should travel approximately 1.6 kilometres towards Hiniduma from Thawalama Junction. At this intersection, the road to the left leads to the bridge over the Gin Ganga River. The Tavalama Batahena Ambalama is situated on the left-hand side of the starting point of this road. This Ambalama, which was severely dilapidated, underwent renovation in 2019, restoring it to its former glory.

The Ambalama was declared an archaeological monument on February 1, 2023.
