Yatiwawala is situated in the Galagedara area within the Harispattuwa Divisional Secretariat of the Kandy District. To reach the Ambalama, one must walk along Polwatte Mawatha for approximately 350 meters in front of the Yatiwawala Cemetery. The structure is located beside a paddy field along this route.

The Tradition of the Ambalama

Wayside shelters constructed near roads for the convenience of travelers are known as Ambalama. In earlier times, these shelters were used not only by ordinary travelers but also by kings and ministers during long journeys. The construction of an ambalama for the benefit of weary travelers was regarded as a highly meritorious deed, influenced by the strong Buddhist values that shaped social life in Sri Lanka.

As a result, Ambalams were commonly built along public roads at intervals of about 2 to 3 miles. Some older villages even possessed two or three such structures. Beyond serving as resting places for travelers, Ambalams also functioned as important communal gathering spaces for the residents of surrounding villages.

Historical Background and Structure

Even today, a number of Ambalams dating from the period of the Kandyan Kingdom as well as the colonial era remain standing. The Yatiwawala Ambalama may once have served travellers journeying between Kurunegala and the ancient city of Kandy.

The structure is built of brick and mortar and stands on a cement base. Its roof is supported by four pillars, forming a simple open shelter. Because of its straightforward construction, the building does not contain notable decorative or artistic features. Nevertheless, it remains historically significant as a functional structure that preserves the long-standing tradition of providing rest and shelter for travellers.

Architectural Features and Social Hierarchy

The design of this Ambalama appears to reflect the class distinctions that existed in traditional society. Low ledge-like walls were constructed around the structure to serve as seating for those resting inside.

The walls on either side of the entrance are the lowest among the surrounding walls. The wall on the left side is built at the same height. The rear wall of the Ambalama is approximately 10 centimeters higher than the left wall, while the wall on the right side rises about 10 centimeters higher than the rear wall, making it the tallest within the structure.

This variation in wall height may indicate a social convention in which seating of different heights was provided for individuals of varying status. Such an arrangement likely reflected the hierarchical nature of social organization in earlier periods.
