The first thing which comes to mind when you speak about Palwatta is the massive Sugar Plantation. However, thousands of years ago this area was a thriving Buddhist community with temples dotting the landscape.

Sri Devagiri Rajamaha Viharaya lies 7 km from the Palwatta Junction towards Passara. This is the third of the three Rajamaha Vihara temples lying along the Passara Road from Palawatta. The first one is the Mulgiri Rajamaha Viharaya, the second is the Sri Ovagiri Rajamaha Viharaya.

The temple premises are scattered with granite artefacts of a temple which had existed a millennia ago. Broken pillars carved of rock can be seen standing in several places, the only remains of ancient buildings. Various shaped and sized flower alters carved out rock, partial guard stones and other artefacts can be seen scattered around the temple.
