Hambegamuwa is a village on the Kalthota – Thanamalwila road. Although this area is now covered in jungle with scattered villages along the road, this area has been covered in Buddhist Aramic complexes in the ancient past.
Ruins of this ancient civilization appears from time to time in current temples though most of these are still undocumented hidden by the jungles.
Hambegamuwa Purana Rajamaha Viharaya lies right at the ancient Hambegamuwa reservoir almost at the center of the village right next to the road. Although this looks a new temple from outside, in the rear of the temple, close to the reservoir stands a large stupa which has been recently conserved. It was found as mound of earth before any restoration was done. In addition you will find scattered stone artifacts including stone columns of an ancient building at this temple.
To complete the visit to this temple, you could visit the Hambegamuwa reservoir which can be accessed through the road just before temple land. This road directly leads to the bund of the reservoir which gives a picturesque view of the surrounding jungle area over the water.
