The Ambanwala Kande Devalaya is an ancient shrine situated in the Ambanwala, Kovilkanda area. According to local folklore, the original devalaya is believed to have been constructed during the reign of King Dutugemunu. Despite its location in a remote region, it remains an active place of worship for the residents of the surrounding villages.
The Ancient Ambalama
Located at the entrance to the devalaya grounds is an ancient ambalama that displays architectural characteristics of the Kandyan era. This square structure is constructed upon a square platform and features short walls on all four sides, with an opening provided for the entrance. These walls serve a dual purpose, also functioning as seating ledges.
Consistent with typical ambalamas of the Kandyan Period, the walls are built to varying heights. The rear wall stands few inches taller than the side walls, while the front wall is a few inches shorter. These seating arrangements were historically designed to accommodate different castes in accordance with their social standing. The roof is constructed with a double slant using flat clay tiles, a style that is also typical of the Kandyan era.
