Padivettina Malai is a remote rock plateau hidden between Toppigala and Kusalankanda, scattered with pillars, carved steps, and remnants of an ancient monastery. Blending archaeology with Tamil folklore, this isolated site offers a rare glimpse into long-forgotten life amid Sri Lanka’s wilderness.
Padivettina Malai is a remote and largely forgotten archaeological site located between the Toppigala and Kusalankanda Ruins, in a region rarely visited. The landscape is dominated by rocky plateaus, many of which show signs of ancient monastic activity. Several of these outcrops, including those at Kusalankanda, have since been converted into Hindu kovils.
The name Padivettina Malai derives from Tamil: Padi : படி (steps), Vettina : வெட்டின (cut, carved, or hewn), and Malai :மலை (hill, mountain, or rock). The summit of this rocky plateau is scattered with the remains of an ancient monastery.
At the top of the rock, where steps have been cut into the surface, lie fallen pillars, pillar bases, and a partially buried stone disk that may once have served as a flower altar or perhaps the chatra of an ancient stupa. The surrounding area is strewn with brick fragments and roofing tiles from long-lost structures.
According to local Tamil folklore, a regional ruler once built his fortified residence on this rocky height. Its elevated position would have allowed him to observe approaching enemies and keep watch over his cattle. Locals believe that the ruins visible today are remnants of this fortified dwelling.
Padivettina Malai lies in a remote area and can be reached either from Toppigala or from the direction of Kusalankanda.
From Valachchenai, travel along the road to Toppigala via the Kiran Bridge for 12.5 kilometers (7.8 miles) until you reach the 5th milepost. Turn left at the four-way junction and continue for another 11.5 kilometers (7.1 miles) to the Ilavanai Bridge over the Lavani Aru. The archaeological site is located just beyond the bridge on the left.
This site needs urgent attention from the Department of Archaeology before someone decides to build a kovil on top of these ruins.
