You will still find old Ambalama’s built for the weary travellers on the road on the old Kandy – Kurunegala road (currently Midawala – Ranawana via Katugastota road – 603). Among them lies the Aththaragama Ambalama in Aththaragama village under the Harispattuwa regional secretariat.
Aththaragama Ambalama is made of wood and stone and has several carved wooden pillars. Among the carvings, floral motifs, an image of an elephant carrying a relic casket and some bo leaves can be seen. Timber pillars are decorated with simple pillar heads (Pekada).
There is a stone-built Pintaliya (a vessel for drinking water) and a stone-finished moonstone here for the people who are resting in Ambalam. The pillars on the four sides of this Ambalama are built with simple carvings reminiscent of Dutch architecture. The roof is two pinnacles finished with clay.
