Pahanthuda literally refers to the wick of a small clay lamp, particularly the type traditionally used in temples. The waterfall derives its name from the shape of its base pool, which resembles a clay lamp, while the falling water itself is said to resemble the wick of the lamp.

Location and Access

The 5-metre (16.4-foot) high Pahanthudawa Ella, also known as Pahanthuda Ella, is located approximately 1.5 kilometres (0.9 miles) from Belihuloya. The road leading towards the waterfall extends for approximately 0.5 kilometers (0.3 miles) through the mountainous terrain. The access road begins immediately beside the Belihuloya Rest House.

The waterfall can be reached by any type of vehicle, and a spacious car park is available near the falls. A ticket counter is located beside the car park, where an adult admission ticket costs LKR 30.

The LCWF has identified this waterfall as the Galagama Falls and Eberhard Kautzsch in his “A guide to waterfalls of Sri Lanka” too states “Galagama Fall is called Pahanthudawa Ella by native people after the Pahantuda wick. burner of a small oil lamp. The waterfalls’ shape looks very much like this.” But it is now the general consensus that the Galagama Ella lies above this waterfall and lies on the edges of Horton Plains.
