Massive Buddha Statue atop Athugala Rock

Ethugala, the iconic “Elephant Rock,” towers 325 meters over Kurunegala. Crowned by a majestic 88-foot white Buddha statue, it offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the city and lake. Whether you hike the stone steps or drive up, it is a serene sanctuary perfect for spiritual reflection and stunning sunset photography.

Kurunegala, located in Sri Lanka’s North Western Province, served as the island’s royal capital between 1293 CE and 1341 CE. Nestled among a ring of massive rock outcrops, the city enjoyed natural protection from external invasions. These surrounding rock formations gave Kurunegala a strategic advantage and contributed to its selection as a capital.

Among these natural fortifications are:

  • Athugala (Ethugala)Elephant Rock
  • IbbagalaTortoise Rock
  • KuruminigalaBeetle Rock
  • AndagalaEel Rock

Each rock is named based on its resemblance to a specific animal, giving the region a unique folkloric charm. Of all these, Athugala stands as the tallest and most prominent, making it the most recognizable landmark of Kurunegala.

Legends of Athugala Rock

According to local legend, a controversial ruler named Vathimi Bandara is closely associated with Athugala. He was the son of a lesser royal consort (Yakada Doliya), who was of Islamic faith. The young prince was raised in Beruwala by his mother’s family and was later made king upon his father’s death, despite not being the rightful heir.

Vathimi Bandara’s rule quickly became unpopular among the Sinhalese populace. In an attempt to remove him, a group devised a plan to lure him to the summit of Athugala Rock under the pretense of a pirith chanting ceremony. Once the king was seated on a specially prepared seat at the edge of the cliff, it was knocked off the cliff, killing him instantly.

Following his death, the king came to be worshipped as a local guardian deity known as Gale Bandara Deviyo. Remarkably, he is venerated by both Muslims and Sinhalese, a rare instance of both faiths worshiping this deity as their own in harmony.

Athugala Rock and the Buddha Statue

In 2003, Athugala gained further prominence with the construction of a massive Samadhi Buddha statue atop the rock standing at 88 feet (27 meters). At the peak, the Athugala Viharaya (temple) was established, turning the site into a significant pilgrimage destination and a popular tourist attraction.

How to Reach Athugala Rock and the Buddha Statue

Visitors can reach Athugala either by foot or by vehicle:

By Foot

From the main Athugala Road, a signboard indicates the footpath leading to the rock. The trail begins at the base and ascends via a series of stone steps carved into the rock’s slope. The climb is fairly direct and takes about 15–20 minutes. Though not overly strenuous, it is a steady upward hike.

By Vehicle

The Athugala Road extends all the way to the summit through the forested slope of the rock. The road is paved and well maintained, but it features steep inclines and sharp hairpin bends. It is recommended to use a vehicle with sufficient power to handle the ascent safely.

Another convenient option to reach Athugala Temple is by tuk-tuk (three-wheeler). At the entrance to Athugala Road, you’ll find a dedicated three-wheeler park that primarily serves pilgrims and visitors heading to the temple. These tuk-tuks are available for hire and can comfortably take you up the winding road to the summit.

Ticket Price for Athugala Temple

There is no entrance fee or ticket required to visit either the Buddha statue or the temple. However, a donation desk is located near the temple premises where visitors can make voluntary contributions to support the upkeep and maintenance of the site. Donations are appreciated, and a receipt will be issued for any amount you choose to give.
