Undocumented Archaeological Ruins Reported in EIA of Upper Elehara Canal Project

Shaila Gangaramaya Viharaya

This ancient temple, located approximately 1,500 meters from the right side of the canal near the Elahera Junction, features distinctive cut marks on a rock surface—evidence of its historical significance. Today, the site has been transformed into a modern temple, but traces of its ancient past still remain. It is situated in the North Central Province, within the Polonnaruwa District, under the jurisdiction of the Elahera Divisional Secretariat and the Elahera Grama Niladhari Division.

Athikampitiya Ruins near Wadi Ela

A ruined structure built with limestone was identified approximately 245 meters from the left side of the canal. Within the area, remnants such as stone pillars and stone blocks—likely used in the construction of walls—can still be seen, indicating the presence of a significant ancient building. This site is located in the North Central Province, in the Polonnaruwa District, under the Elahera Divisional Secretariat Division and the Elahera Grama Niladhari Division.

Thanthirigala Ruins

An area containing stone blocks believed to be part of a ruined structure was identified approximately 1,400 meters from the left side of the canal. The site suggests the presence of an ancient building or construction. It is located in the North Central Province, within the Polonnaruwa District, under the Elahera Divisional Secretariat Division and the Elahera Grama Niladhari Division.

Puwakgaha Ulpatha

An ancient spring known as Puwakgaha Ulpatha was identified approximately 800 meters from the left side of the canal. This natural water source holds historical significance and is located in the North Central Province, within the Polonnaruwa District, under the Elahera Divisional Secretariat Division, and the Kottapitiya Grama Niladhari Division.

Damanayaya Walasge

A cave with ancient brick structures, known as Damayaya Walsge, was identified approximately 300 meters from the left side of the canal. This historically significant site is located in the North Central Province, within the Polonnaruwa District, under the Elahera Divisional Secretariat Division, and the Damanayaya Grama Niladhari Division.

Ruins at Dambulukele – No. 1

An ancient structure, which has been excavated by treasure hunters, has been identified within the Dambulukele area, approximately 100 meters from the right side of the Elahera–Minneriya Yoda Ela Canal. The site lies around 9 kilometers from Bakamuna along the Bakamuna–Giritale road. However, reaching the ruins requires crossing the canal and walking through the jungle, as it is located in a remote and overgrown area.

This archaeological site is located in the North Central Province, within the Polonnaruwa District, under the Elahera Divisional Secretariat Division, and the Segala Grama Niladhari Division.

Ruins at Dambulukele – No. 2

Ancient structure which has been excavated by treasure hunters was identified within Dambulukele within a distance of 12 meters from the right side of the Canal. Stone pillers and tiles were identified within the area. The site lies around 10 kilometers from Bakamuna along the Bakamuna–Giritale road. However, reaching the ruins requires crossing the canal and walking through the jungle, as it is located in a remote and forested area.

This archaeological site is located in the North Central Province, within the Polonnaruwa District, under the Elahera Divisional Secretariat Division, and the Attanakadawala South Grama Niladhari Division.

Ruins at Dambulukele – No. 3

Ancient structure with stone retaining walls was identified within Dambulukele on the Canal Path. The site lies around 9 kilometers from Bakamuna along the Bakamuna–Giritale road. However, reaching the ruins requires crossing the canal and walking through the jungle, as it is located in a remote and forested area.

This archaeological site is located in the North Central Province, within the Polonnaruwa District, under the Elahera Divisional Secretariat Division, and the Attanakadawala South Grama Niladhari Division.

Archaeological Ruins at Pekkulama

Ancient structure with stone blocks, stone pillars, tiles and potsherds was identified within a distance of about 250 meters from the right side of the Canal. This is belongs to an ancient settlement.

This archaeological site is located in the North Central Province, within the Polonnaruwa District, under the Elahera Divisional Secretariat Division, and the Konduruwawa Grama Niladhari Division.

Archaeological Ruins near Beegahawela Ancient Tank by the side of Ruppe Ela

Ancient structure which has been excavated by treasure hunters was identified within a distance of about 453 meters from the right side of the Canal. Stone pillars and stone retaining walls could be identified with in the area.

This archaeological site is located in the North Central Province, within the Matale District, under the Dambulla Divisional Secretariat Division, and the Pol Attawa Grama Niladhari Division.

Gallinda Ancient Mahasen Devalaya

Gallinda Ancient Mahasen Devalaya is situated within a distance of about 769 meters from the left side of the Canal. The Devalaya can be accessed from the Sigiriya Road which starts from Moragaswewa road. The turn off to the Gallinda Ancient Mahasen Devalaya lies 5.5 km from Moragaswewa and 7.2 km from Sigiriya Lake. GPS Location : 7°59’42.0″N 80°47’34.2″E

Gallinda

Ancient Gallinda is situated within a distance of about 762 meters from the left side of the Canal. The Gallinda can be accessed from the Sigiriya Road which starts from Moragaswewa road. The turn off to the Gallinda Ancient Mahasen Devalaya lies 5.5 km from Moragaswewa and 7.2 km from Sigiriya Lake. A small gravel road leads in to the jungle for 200 meters where the Devalaya lies. Inbetween lies another gravel road to the right. Traveling on this road for 125 meters will take you the site.

This archaeological site is located in the North Central Province, within the Polonnaruwa District, under the Hingurakgoda Divisional Secretariat Division, and the Mahasengama Grama Niladhari Division.
