Hidden within the heart of Harispattuwa, Aththaragama Rajamaha Viharaya carries whispers of ancient kings and forgotten artistry. Believed to be built by King Wattagamini Abhaya, this temple is famed for its rare, beautifully carved moonstones—each one a silent echo of Sri Lanka’s timeless heritage.

Aththaragama is a well-known gabada gama (village of the Royal Stores) situated in the Medasiya Pattuwa of Harispattuwa in the Kandy District.

The Village of Aththaragama

It is said that King Wattagamini Abhaya (89–76 BCE), popularly known as King Walagamba, fled to Malaya Rata during a foreign invasion and lost his way in this region, leading to the area being named Attaragama. During the reign of King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe (1739–1781 CE), the village was reputed to be inhabited by criminals and was referred to as an abandoned village. Another theory suggests that the harem of the Nayakkar dynasty kings was located here, with relatives of the Nayakkar lineage residing in the village. Additionally, it is believed that Aththaragama functioned as a warehouse village during the Kotte period (Dissanayake, 2023).

Aththaragama gained further prominence through the renowned scholar Attaragama Rajaguru Bandara, who authored works such as Karakapushpamanjariya (කාරකපුෂ්පමඤ්ජරිය), Sudheeramukhamandanaya (සුධීරමුඛමණ්ඩනය), and Rupamalawa (රූපමාලාව). He played a vital role in assisting Welivita Saranankara Sangharaja Thero in reviving the nearly extinct Buddhist education and religious studies in Sri Lanka. The village is also known for its distinguished lineage of Sinhala physicians, a tradition that continues unbroken to the present day (Sinhala Vishwakoshaya Contributors, 2023).

The Viharaya

There is limited verified historical information regarding the Aththaragama Viharaya. Tradition holds that it was built by King Wattagamini Abhaya (89–76 BCE). Among its most significant features are the distinctive moonstones found within the temple premises, noted for their unusual designs and varied shapes.

According to legend, around 1800 CE, a conflict arose between the villagers of Palkumbura and Aththaragama, during which the Palkumbura villagers destroyed the temple’s works. In response, the Aththaragama villagers went to Palkumbura and brought the stone carvings back to their temple. Based on stylistic features, the existing stone carvings at Aththaragama are believed to date from the 19th century (Dissanayake, 2023).
