Kokkaddichcholai Archaeological Ruins in Kiran (කිරාන් කොක්කඩ්ඩිචෝලෛ පුරාවිද්‍යා නටබුන්)

The Anurādhapura-period Kokkaddichcholai ruins in Kiran, Batticaloa are located within a large paddy field near the Perillaveli Reservoir. Heavily destroyed by agricultural expansion, the site’s primary surviving visible remains are two stone pillars showing ancient quarrying marks, measuring 120 cm and 80 cm in length.

The archaeological ruins are located in the village of Kokkaddichcholai, within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Perillaveli (209), in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōrale Pattu South (Kiran), in the Batticaloa District.

Access Route

Starting from Kiran Junction, travel via Pulipanjakal towards the Sodian Reservoir. After passing the Perillaveli Kulam Reservoir in the village of Kokkaddichcholai, continue for approximately 300 meters (984 ft). The ruins are located approximately 50 meters (164 ft) inside a large paddy field.

Historical Background

Based on the archaeological characteristics of the remains, these ruins have been identified as the remains of ancient structures dating to the Anuradhapura period.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

The site has suffered extensive destruction as a result of the expansion of surrounding paddy cultivation, and consequently, almost all of the original structural features have been lost.

Among the surviving remains are two stone pillars bearing quarrying marks, measuring 120 centimeters (47.2 in) and 80 centimeters (31.5 in) in length, respectively. These constitute the only visible archaeological evidence remaining at the site.
