Awaranthulawa is a remote village lying 17 kilometres away from Vavuniya town. Awaranthulawa was a border village during the LTTE Terrorists were active over a decades ago. During this period, the Sinhalese farmers in Awaranthulawa village had to evacuate their homes to avoid being massacred. However, the terrorists managed to murder six women and one man in two houses on 12th April 2007.

Once the LTTE Terrorists were defeated, the village was re-populated and the Sinhalese villagers arrived back to the village. With the re-settlement of this village, a new temple called Chethiyagiri Viharaya has been built. The Bodhi tree lies on the rear border of the temple. Behind this Bodhi tree lies the Awaranthulawa Archaeological Site which was declared as a protected archaeological site by the Gazette published on 23 February 2007. It describes the site as;

Two dagobas, situated in the forest of Awarantulawa in the Village of Pawakkulama in the Grama Niladhri Division of Settikulama bearing No. 228 in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Vauniya South, Vauniya District, Northern Province.

The ruins of Awaranthulawa lie on a large rocky plain. The key artefact of the site is the fairly large stupa at a high point of the rock. Now resembling a mound of stone covered by grass this is about 8 feet in height today.

In addition, the site is scattered with pillar bases, lamp stones, pillars and large bricks with curved surfaces. The rocky plain has about 7 rock ponds at various places. A large pond lies at one end of the rock.

Although the site was declared as a protected archaeological site in 2007, no excavation or conservation of the site has been carried out on the site.
