The ruined Pawathkulama Mahaulukwewa (Periya Ulukkulam) ancient temple is located in the 60-acre (Akkara 60, අක්කර 60) Grama Sevaka area of Vavuniya South Divisional Secretariat. The ruins of this temple are spread over a large rock on the south bank of Kallaru Oya, a tributary of Malwatu Oya. Mahaulukwewa (Periya Ulukkulam) reservoir has been built by daming this stream.

The most convenient way to reach this place is from the four-way junction found just before the Vavuniya Periya Ulukkulama School and taking a left turn towards the road along the Cultivation Canal and travelling for about 1.5 km. After that, you need to turn right and travel a further 2km along a side canal and go for about 200 meters on the road across a paddy field.

There is no doubt that this temple is a place with a history that stretches back to the early Anuradhapura period. In one place of the rock, there is an ancient stupa, now resembling a rather large mound. It has been dug up and destroyed by treasure hunters. Another similar small mound is found elsewhere and a small structure has been built to light lamps.

Farmers who come to work in the fields around here occasionally light lamps. Bricks and tiles are scattered in places throughout the stone floor. In some places, parts of stone walls which can be considered as building foundations or stupa courtyards are found. Also, stone pillars are seen in one place. In addition, a Siripatul stone, a natural stone pond, a lamp pit and 3 grinding pits can be seen on this rock.

If proper excavation is done, many more constructions under the soil will undoubtedly be found at this place.
