The 22-meter Baker’s Falls (Sinhalese name: Gonagala Ella – ගෝනගල ඇල්ල) is renowned for the thunderous roar created as the water crashes onto the massive rock formation at its base. Forming part of the Belihul Oya, the waterfall is surrounded by lush vegetation, including towering ferns and vibrant rhododendrons.
The water cascades over a broad, dark rock face before plunging about 20 meters into a deep gorge, creating a dramatic and picturesque scene.
Baker’s Falls is named after Sir Samuel Baker, the British explorer who discovered it in 1845. During the colonial era, the Horton Plains teemed with wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, elk, and leopards. Baker himself is remembered, though controversially, for having shot fifty elephants, five deer, and two buffaloes on these plains.
Despite repeated warnings—often ignored or removed by overconfident visitors—the 12-meter plunge pool beneath the falls has proven deadly, claiming numerous lives over the years.
Located within Horton Plains National Park (Nuwara Eliya District), Baker’s Falls can be reached from Pattipola or Ohiya. From Pattipola, a clearly marked trail leads to World’s End and loops back to the falls, or you can take the right fork at the trail’s beginning for a more direct route. The final descent to the waterfall is steep and root-covered, demanding extra caution—especially in wet weather.
