Beaches of Trincomalee (ත්‍රිකුණාමල මුහුදු වෙරල)

Trincomalee is considered one of the newest hot spots for tourism. 30 years of terror of the Tamil Tigers had saved the beaches of the East Coast from being commercialized. Kilometres of empty white sandy beaches with crystal clear sea has made Trincomalee one of the most sought-after beach destinations.

Trincomalee is lies in the dry zone and it generally sunny throughout the year. The temperature can reach up to 35°-36° C (95°-96°F) during the April to September period. A lot of rain can be expected during  January, February, September, October, November and December.

There are 4 popular beach areas in Trincomalee.

Trincomalee Town Beach

Lying right in the city just before the Trincomalee Fort, this is the most popular beach for local pilgrims who come to Trincomalee. You can find busloads of local tourists during the holiday season. The sea is very safe to bathe.

Uppuveli Beach

When it comes to great beaches, you will be spoiled for choice along the east coast of Sri Lanka. Uppluweli Beach and Nilaveli Beach are two of the best. Traveling about 5 km to the north of Trincomalee town lies Uppuveli Beach which is a popular tourist destination with a number of good beach hotels. Still unspoilt and picture clean.

Nilaveli Beach

11 kilometres north of Trincomalee town lies Nilaveli Beach, the most famous of Trincomalee Beaches with best star class hotels on a kilometre stretch of unspoiled white sandy beach. Access to Pigeons Island Corrals is through this beach.

Lying inside Koddiar Bay (Trincomalee Bay) is a good beach for a peaceful bath. The Marble Beach Resort, an air force run resort lies at the beach.
