When it comes to spectacular beaches, Sri Lanka’s east coast offers an abundance of choices. Among its finest coastal destinations are Pasikudah and Kalkudah, located approximately 33 kilometers (20.5 miles) north of Batticaloa. These adjoining beaches are separated by a small headland, with Pasikudah on the northern side and Kalkudah on the southern side. Both feature kilometers of unspoiled white sandy beaches and shallow, calm waters that are ideal for swimming and relaxation.
Pasikudah Beach
Pasikudah is a picturesque horseshoe-shaped bay protected by an offshore coral reef, creating exceptionally calm, clear, and shallow waters. Visitors can walk several hundred meters (over 1,000 ft) into the sea while remaining in relatively shallow water. Unlike the surf-dominated beaches of Sri Lanka’s southern coast, Pasikudah is renowned for its safe swimming and excellent snorkeling conditions.
The beach is lined with more than a dozen high-end luxury resorts, offering a wide range of accommodation, dining, and recreational facilities.
Pasikudah is particularly well suited for families with young children, visitors interested in water sports, travellers seeking fine dining within easy reach, and those who prefer the comfort and safety of swimming in shallow waters rather than the open sea.
Kalkudah Beach
Stretching for approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles), Kalkudah is the quieter and less developed counterpart to its famous neighbor, Pasikudah. While Pasikudah is characterized by luxury resorts and a lively tourist atmosphere, Kalkudah retains a peaceful, unspoiled character. Its wide expanse of golden sand offers a rare sense of solitude, where footprints in the sand are often limited to your own, occasionally accompanied by those of local fishermen and grazing cattle.
Protected by the same offshore coral reef as Pasikudah, the waters at Kalkudah are also shallow and remarkably calm, with minimal wave action extending several hundred meters (over 1,000 ft) from the shore.
Kalkudah is an ideal destination for backpackers, couples, and slow travelers seeking to escape busy tourist areas, experience the relaxed atmosphere of coastal village life, or enjoy an extensive, untouched beachfront in a tranquil natural setting.
