Budubawa lies hidden within the deep forest region that forms a natural boundary between Yala National Park, Kumana National Park, and Kudumbigala Sanctuary. The site has no official signage or any access road and has remained outside the scope of any formal archaeological exploration except by treasure hunters.
Historical Background
Budubawa is believed to have been part of an extensive network of monasteries belonging to the Ruhunu Kingdom, active during the early Anuradhapura period. Although no inscriptions or textual references have been found, the site’s architectural features are consistent with constructions from the 1st–2nd centuries BCE. Similar monastic complexes—such as those at Kudumbigala, Bambaragasthalawa, and Kumana—are known to have been thriving meditation centers for forest-dwelling monks during this era.
The most prominent surviving element is a small rock cave with a clearly hewn drip ledge, indicating it once served as a dwelling for monks. At the summit of Budubawa rock, the remains of ancient masonry and stone foundations are barely visible, though their exact functions are unknown. Local tradition claims that a stone staircase once ascended to the peak, allowing access for pilgrims and monks alike.
From the summit, the view is remarkable, offering a 360-degree panorama over the Nilgiri Stupa, the distant Monaragala mountain range, and the sweeping forests of Yala, Kudumbigala, Bambaragasthalawa, and Kiripokuna.
Later History
During Sri Lanka’s thirty-year civil conflict, the remoteness and natural cover of Budubawa’s caves reportedly provided shelter for LTTE terrorists, who are said to have maintained a temporary camp here.
Present Condition
No formal excavation or conservation work has been carried out at Budubawa. The absence of protection leaves the site vulnerable to natural erosion and potential human disturbance. The caves and summit remain largely undisturbed due to their inaccessibility, but vegetation overgrowth and exposure to the elements threaten the preservation of any remains.
Access & Travel Information
Reaching Budubawa is challenging and requires an experienced local guide familiar with the area’s unmarked jungle paths. The journey typically begins from Panama village in the Ampara District. From Panama, travel 350 meters past the Panama Police Station and take the right-hand gravel road.
This road passes the Panama Wewa Reservoir and winds through remote chena cultivations before reaching the dilapidated Wedagama Wewa Reservoir after approximately 7.5 kilometers. Upon crossing the tank’s bund, the route enters dense forest.
From here, travel is possible only by tractor along narrow jungle tracks, after which the final stretch must be covered on foot. The last approach is via a small footpath leading to the base of the rock. There are no visitor facilities, and travelers must be prepared for harsh terrain, extreme humidity, and possible encounters with wild elephants.
The journey cannot be completed in a single day. Plans must be made to spend the night at this rocky outcrop and begin the return trip the following day.
