Chunnakam (ancient name : Hunugama) is a town in the Jaffna penisula lying about 10 km off the Jaffna town on the Kankasanthure road. Chunnakam (Hunugama) is most known for the ancient Kadurugoda Viharaya belonging to the Anuradhapura era.
Another item of interest at Chunnakam is the old market building built by the Dutch during its occupation of Sri Lanka between 1658 to 1796.
-0-This building play the same role today for which it was built over 200 year ago. Chunnakam market is a thriving market place serving the town from vegetables to cloths to mobile phones sold at the various shops setup in the area.
Unfortunately new sheds have been setup to open room for new hawkers covering this magnificent building from all sides. Although declared as a archaeological monument, the central dutch building is badly in need of maintenance if not conservation.
