The Deraniyagala–Noori Road is dotted with numerous waterfalls, some well-known and others unnamed and little explored. Among these, Rakkanawa Ella Falls—also called Watawala Ella after the stream from which it originates—has become a popular stop for travellers. This small yet exceptionally wide cascade forms at a broad section of the Watawala Oya, where the river flows over rocky terrain. The waterfall has two distinct sections, which cannot be viewed from a single vantage point.
How to Get There
From Deraniyagala, travel about 21 km along the Noori Road until you reach a three-way junction. Take the road to the left towards Noori and continue for approximately 500 m until you reach a fork. Follow the left fork downhill, where a signboard points to Keetihena Purana Rajamaha Viharaya. Continue for 250 m to a bridge over the Watawala Oya. On the left bank, a narrow concrete road leads upstream to the cascade. Continuing along the Noori Road, travelers can discover several other waterfalls—refer to the Google Map below for their locations.
Tourist Information
The road near the falls is narrow, with parking space for about 10 vehicles. It can become crowded on weekends and holidays. However, the broad width of the falls allows multiple groups to enjoy the area without feeling congested. For a quieter experience, weekdays offer more privacy and uninterrupted enjoyment of the surroundings.
On-Site Safety and Etiquette
- Stay on marked paths: Straying from designated trails can be dangerous due to unstable ground, slippery rocks, and hidden hazards, and it helps protect the local ecosystem.
- Be conscious of the weather when bathing: Sudden flash floods can occur from rain upstream, so always monitor water levels.
- Check depth and currents before entering the water: If the site is empty, consult a local villager about safe bathing areas.
- Follow “Leave No Trace” principles: Take all your litter with you, including biodegradable waste such as fruit peels, which can harm wildlife.
- Respect local culture: When passing through villages, dress modestly and be mindful of customs.
- Be cautious with photography: Exercise care near cliffs and slippery rocks.
