The Anurādhapura-period Eluppadimunmaari ruins in Kiran, Batticaloa are scattered across chena cultivation lands. The site features four stone pillar fragments, and 200 meters north, another ruined building layout spanning 15 perches. These remains—including a unique stone pillar with a carved hole—suffer from unauthorized excavations and wartime destruction.

The Eluppadimunmaari Archaeological Ruins are located in the village of Eluppadimunmaari, within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Thihilivaddai (200 A), in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōrale Pattu South (Kiran), Batticaloa District.

Access Route

Traveling from Eravur, turn left at the Santhiveli Piḷḷaiyār Kovil and travel approximately 800 m (0.5 miles) towards a natural waterbody. Cross the lake using the Santhiveli–Kiran ferry service, which is capable of transporting vehicles. From the ferry landing, continue for approximately 3.5 km (2.2 miles) along the interior roads that pass through chena cultivation lands and forest patches to reach the site.

Alternatively, the ferry can be avoided by traveling to Kiran and taking the Thoppigala Road. After approximately 1.2 km (0.7 miles), reach the four-way junction. Turn right to cross the bridge over the Maduru Oya. From there, turn left and continue by road to reach the site.

Historical Background

The site contains the ruined remains of an ancient building, much of which has been destroyed and its structural elements displaced. Based on the architectural characteristics of the surviving remains, the site can be dated to the Anurādhapura period.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

Archaeological remains of an ancient structure are scattered across land presently used for chena cultivation. At one location, four stone pillar fragments, each approximately 45 cm (17.7 in) in length, can be identified.

Approximately 200 m (656 ft) to the north, the remains of another ancient building are scattered over an area of about 15 perches (approximately 380 square meters or 4,090 square feet). Among these remains are two stone pillars, one of which has a hole carved through it. All of these archaeological remains have been disturbed by unauthorized excavations.

It appears that an ancient ruins site was destroyed during the armed conflict between the Tamil Tiger terrorists and the Sri Lankan government between 1983 and 2009.
