This ancient site, where the Maha Rahaths resided since the Anuradhapura era, is located in the Padaviya region of the Anuradhapura District, amidst a vast forest. Its name has been identified as ‘Pannabhaya’ (පන්නභරය) from the inscriptions found here. The site features a large number of rock-cut caves around a rock outcrop.
In recent times, there are caves kuti which can accommodate even 50 bhikkhus and small shelter huts constructed. Currently, monks engaged in meditation reside in this serene forest monastery, which is surrounded by rich natural beauty and wildlife. This monastery is considered an ideal tranquil place for monks dedicated to meditation.
The monastery is situated on an elevated rock platform, with the site still being accessed by the same ancient stone steps cut thousands of years ago. Many ancient artefacts discovered during the construction of the new monastery have been preserved here. However, numerous other ancient remains remain hidden within the forest.
To reach this location, one must travel approximately 20 kilometres from Kabitigollawa on the Padaviya road. From there, it is about a kilometre along a sandy road to the monastery. It is important to remember that this is still an active meditation site, and visitors should conduct themselves appropriately.
