On the Tissapura Road, about 1.5 kilometres south of the 96 Junction on the Kantalai-Trincomalee Road, and after travelling approximately 500 meters along a road to the west of an army camp, one can find an ancient monastery site with ruins. This site is located in the 228G Mollipothana North Grama Niladhari Division, within the Thambalagamuwa Divisional Secretariat Division.
Based on the visible remains at this monastery, it is certain that the site dates back to the early Anuradhapura period. The site contains several ruins and stone fragments belonging to various buildings in the northern part of the monastery grounds. Notable finds include the remnants of an ancient mound with stones and bricks, as well as other building foundations.
Additionally, fragments of a small-sized stone Buddha statue and parts of what may be a statue of a king or a Bodhisattva can be observed at this location. The site also features scattered stone fragments and remains of other construction materials throughout the monastery grounds.
Currently, the monastery has undergone many developmental activities, including the completion of a vihara, residential quarters, and the Bodhi tree enclosure. However, there has not yet been a comprehensive archaeological survey conducted at this site, and further detailed investigation could reveal more significant information. Moreover, there have been occasional disputes related to the site due to the presence of other religious groups residing around the area.
