Malayadikulama Wewa Archaeological Site is located in the Trincomalee District, between the Malayadikulama Wewa (Tamil: Malayadi kulam) and Mummalaikulama Wewa (Tamil: Mummalai kulam) reservoirs, on the boundary of the protected forest area. It is situated along the Kucchaveli-Gomarankadawala road, a short distance from theKunchkumban Aru Villu.
To reach the site, you must enter the jungle in front of the 6th Vijayabahu Regiment (Delta Company) camp, travel approximately 8 kilometres westward and then proceed northeast through the forest.
The site was first discovered by a team led by the Venerable Arana Vihari Kappetiya there during a trip to study and explore the archaeological sites hidden in the northern part of Trincomalee district.
While the exact date of construction and the identity of the builder remain uncertain, it is clear that the stupa was built during the early Anuradhapura period. The stupa stands about 3.5 feet high with a diameter of approximately 45 feet. It has been dug from the top of the dome to the very bottom of the base by treasure hunters. Rubble stones, bricks and mouldings are found scattered around the stupa.
The northern side of the stupa has been damaged by unauthorized excavation, which has also affected the central chamber of the stupa. The excavation has created a large pit, roughly 15 feet wide and 6 feet deep. It appears that this significant damage was done by thieves searching for treasures long ago.
Approximately 75 meters east of the stupa, a fallen rock pillar is found. Additionally, around 50 meters north of the stupa, there are remnants of several ancient stone pillars. Over time, the site and its surroundings have become covered with vegetation and earth. No other remains have been found in the vicinity.
