Galayaya Sri Sudharamarama Purana Tampita Viharaya (ගලායය ශ්‍රී සුධර්මාරාම පුරාණ ටැම්පිට විහාරය)

Taking Sri Sumanajothi Na Himi Mawatha (known as Galayaya Road in general use) from Pannala town, and traveling 1.1 km inwards you will reach the Galayaya Sri Sudharamarama Purana Viharaya with a rare type of image house known as Tampita Viharaya.

A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform that rests on a number of stumps, usually 3–4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber, and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. The walls inside the chamber are more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.

The stumps on which the image house rests are generally stone pillars, but rarely you find wooden stumps as well. The Tampita Viharaya at the Sri Sudharamarama temple is built at a much higher level and consists of wooden pillars in addition to brick and mortar pillars. An old wooden stairway with seven steps leads to the entrance of this tampita viharaya.

The Tampita Image House (an image house built on stone pillars) belonging to the Galayaya Sri Sudharamarama Purana Viharaya premises, situated in the No. 1546 Ihala Galyaya Grama Niladhari Division in the Pannala Divisional Secretary’s Division, Kurunegala District, was declared as an archaeological protected monument on July 24, 2009.
