Galebedda Rajamaha Viharaya, also known as Undundora Viharaya (උඳුන්දොර රජමහා විහාරය), is situated approximately 12 kilometers from the town of Monaragala along the Siyambalanduwa road. This tranquil and historically significant temple nestles at the base of the majestic Maragala hill, a location that surrounds the site with both serenity and seclusion.
The temple’s grounds cover a vast area of about eighty acres, which has been officially allocated to the Department of Archaeology due to its historical and cultural importance. The site features an ancient stupa measuring 21 cubits in height—roughly 31.5 feet, considering a cubit to be approximately 18 inches. Scattered across the area are remnants of ancient stone pillars that once supported now-vanished structures, attesting to the temple’s long and storied past.
One particularly noteworthy ruin is that of a guardstone, which stands out due to its distinct features not commonly found in other such artifacts across Sri Lanka.
Galebedda Rajamaha Viharaya is located just 700 meters past the Galabedda Biso Pokuna, a renowned site situated directly on the main road.
