Handapangala, well known for its elephant corridor lies 10 km off Wellawaya and 25 km off Thanamalwila and lies on the Wellawaya – Wirawila road.
Adjoining the main road in Weherayaya in Handapangala, lies Sri Gangarama Rajamaha Viharaya with the main road as one border and the Kuda Oya on another border. Today this is a thriving Pirivena providing Buddhist education to the young monks.
Hidden among the new buildings lies an ancient history of the temple. The broken stone pillars now adorn the flower beds. A large stone flower pedestal is used to wipe sand off feet. On a large rock lies a new stupa probably built on the top of an ancient stupa.
Ancient steps cut into the rock lead to the Kuda Oya River.
