Handapangala, a well-known elephant corridor, is located approximately 10 km from Wellawaya and 25 km from Thanamalwila, along the Wellawaya–Weerawila road.
Nestled deep within the forests of Ethiliwewa, near Handapangala, lie the ruins of an ancient temple complex, a testament to a once-flourishing monastic site within the Ruhunu Kingdom. Scattered across the site are monolithic stone pillars—some still standing in their original positions—and fragments of broken columns, offering a glimpse into its historical and architectural significance.
To visit the site, one must travel to Ethiliwewa town, accessible from either Thanamalwila or Wellawaya. From the town, head towards the Ethili Wewa reservoir, about 2 km away. Continue along this route for another 2 km beyond the reservoir to reach the ancient temple ruins.
