Perched 1,950 meters high on Poonagala Mountain, Lipton’s Seat is Haputale’s crown jewel — a 360° viewpoint once favored by Sir Thomas Lipton himself. On a clear morning, the horizon stretches from Trincomalee to Matara, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most breathtaking vistas.

Lipton’s Seat, often regarded as the most spectacular viewpoint in Haputale, crowns the summit of Poonagala Mountain within the Dambethenne Tea Estate. Rising to over 1,950 meters, the site offers a dramatic 360-degree panorama with a sheer drop on one side. Its sweeping vistas are said to rival even the famous World’s End at Horton Plains.

The Legacy of Sir Thomas Lipton

The viewpoint takes its name from Sir Thomas Lipton, the man who introduced the world to Ceylon Tea. Arriving in the 1890s, when the island was under British rule, Lipton purchased the Dambethenne Estate, a vast property of 925 acres. Here he established the largest tea processing factory in the Uva region. Lipton is remembered for often climbing to this very spot to survey his flourishing estate and to host his distinguished guests. Although the estate changed ownership in the 1930s, the viewpoint retained his name, preserving the memory of his connection to the land.

A Panorama Across the Island

On a clear day, the view from Lipton’s Seat stretches astonishingly far — as distant as Trincomalee and Batticaloa on the eastern coast, to Matara in the south. Landmarks such as Badulla, Ratnapura, and Monaragala are also visible, along with the lighthouses of Kirinda, Batticaloa, and Devinuwara glimmering faintly in the distance. However, mist often cloaks the mountain for much of the day. For the best chance at unobstructed views, visitors are advised to arrive by 7 a.m., before the mist settles in around 8.

Getting There

Lipton’s Seat lies about 18 kilometers from Haputale town. The route follows the Haputale–Dambethenne Road for roughly 9.5 kilometers, leading first to the Dambethenne Tea Factory. Entry to the estate requires a ticket priced at Rs. 50 per person. From the factory, a narrow road winds upward to the viewpoint. The journey can be made on foot — a scenic hike of around 2.5 hours — or by three-wheeler or jeep for those preferring a shorter ride.
