Defeat of Portuguese at the Battle of Gannoruwa
It is during the reign of King Buwaneka Bahu VII 1525-1551 that the Portuguese involvement in the internal affairs of Kotte and Seethawaka became pronounced. The Portuguese were involved in the wars that were waged by King Buwaneka Bahu against his brother, Mayadunne, King of Seethawaka.

Kotahena Riot of 1883 (1883 කොටහේන කෝලහාලය)
A violent clash between Buddhists and Catholics in Kotahena, Colombo, sparked by tensions between Deepaduttamarama Temple and St. Lucia’s Cathedral. During a Buddhist Perahera led by Ven. Migettuwatte Gunananda Thera, Catholic mobs attacked the procession, killing one devotee and injuring many.

Uva Wellassa Rebellion of 1817/1818 and Monarawila Keppetipola Memorial
The 1817/18 Uva-Wellassa Rebellion was Sri Lanka’s first major freedom struggle against British rule. Led by the valiant Keppetipola Dissawa, the revolt nearly ousted the colonizers despite brutal scorched-earth tactics. Ultimately betrayed, Keppetipola was executed in Kandy, where a memorial now enshrines his skull.
