An ambalama is a traditional resting place or way station found in Sri Lanka. These structures were historically built to provide shelter and rest for travellers, pilgrims, and traders. Ambalamas are often built along roads, near rivers, or at significant junctions.
A such ambalama, although not very ancient lies on the Ikupitiya Junction in the Pihimbuwa Gramasewaka Division of Kurunegala District. To reach this site, take the road from the Mallawapitiya junction (3.5 km from the Kurunegala town on Katugastota Road) towards Keppitigala, and after 27 kilometres, at the Ilukpitiya junction
The Pihimbuwa Ilukpitiya Ambalama is a sizable, square structure constructed from brick and mortar. Its half-height walls incorporate a built-in ledge around the perimeter, providing seating. The roof, made of Calicut clay tiles, is supported by wooden beams resting on nine brick and mortar pillars along the edge and four central pillars.
The ambalama is well maintained.
