Buddhist Ruins Iranai Iluppaikulam Sivan Kovil in Mannar District — Iranai Iluppaikulam Sivan Kovil in Mannar District

The Iranai Iluppaikulam Sivan Kovil lies in the village of Iranai Iluppaikulam in the Madhu District Secretariat. To reach the kovil one needs to travel 17 km on the Palampiddi road from Vavuniya to reach the Iranai Iluppaikulam 4-way junction. Turn left and travel 100 meters to reach the kovil. The kovil structure is found about 50 meters away from the road on the right.

The kovil has been built recently. There are old stone pillars and bricks found towards the southern direction of the kovil. The residents claim the pillars belong to a 200-year-old kovil at the site which has been removed.

However, these pillars have pickaxe marks corresponding with the Anuradhapura period. Therefore this claim is doubtful. The pillars of this ancient building belonging to the Anuradhapura era have been moved at some time.

There are parts of 8 stone pillars on the site and the longest capsized pillar is 230 x 27 x 25 cm in length, width and height. The size of a brick is 22 x 19 x 6 cm in length, width and height. A part of a stone pillar is used as a step of the well in this site.
