The Archaeological Museum in Jaffna is situated along Navalar Road, approximately 300 meters west of Temple Road. The prominent Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is located directly along Temple Road to the north, serving as a nearby landmark.
The museum stands on land that once belonged to the renowned Tamil scholar and philosopher, Arumuka Navalar. This land was donated to the Department of Archaeology in 1975 by the Arumuka Navalar Foundation. Construction of the museum began the following year, in 1976, under the guidance of Dr. Roland Silva, who was serving as the Archaeological Commissioner at the time.
Museum Architecture and Layout
The museum complex is designed around inner courtyards, with several galleries extending outward from the central structure. Natural light enters the museum only through two gallery doors—one facing the entrance and the other opening into the courtyard. Within the courtyard and surrounding the museum, visitors will find a variety of outdoor exhibits, including small stupas, Dutch-era gravestones, and even whale bones.
The entrance is free; however, near the main entrance stands a donation box labelled “Antiquity Management Fund” to support the preservation of Sri Lanka’s archaeological heritage.
Collections and Exhibits
The museum houses a rich and varied collection of archaeological and cultural artifacts either discovered in the region or donated by individuals. These include stone sculptures of both Buddhist and Hindu origin, ornaments made of beads, ancient coins, ivory and metal objects, ceramic ware, wooden artifacts, colonial-era gravestones (spanning from the Dutch to British periods), and dolls.
A significant portion of the Buddhist sculptures were unearthed at Kantharodai, located roughly 10 kilometers from Jaffna, as well as from Nilavarai, which is a village famed for its spring water, and Kilinochchi, a region known for its role in Sri Lanka’s civil conflict.
Among the stone artifacts are components of Buddhist railings (vedika) and pinnacle stones from ancient stupas. While some of these items date back to the Polonnaruwa period, the majority are believed to be from the Anuradhapura period. The Hindu sculptures at the Jaffna Museum, dating to the early modern era, provide valuable insight into the religious and cultural heritage of the Tamil community in the region.

Travel Directions to Jaffna Archaeological Museum
Jaffna can be reached through two principal routes. The most commonly used approach is via Elephant Pass, which has long served as the traditional gateway to the Jaffna Peninsula.
An alternative route reaches Jaffna from the direction of Pooneryn by crossing the Sangupiddy Bridge. This crossing follows what was historically the ancient route to the peninsula before the construction of modern highways. The route provides a connection between Jaffna and the Mannar region.
