This is perhaps the most popular ambalama in the country. The historic ambalama in Kadugannawa lies right next to the Colombo-Kandy Road just before the hair-pin bend which is also known as “Kadugannawa Pass”)” at Kadugannawa.

This Ambalama is said to have been built during the reign of King Sri Wickremerajasinghe and must have been a popular stopover for the merchants travelling on the arduous route between the ancient hill capital and the lowlands.

Though this building was lying on one of the busiest roads in the country, it was neglected and in a dilapidated condition until 2009. The Department of Archaeology finally restored the building in 2009 maintaining the original architectural details of the Kandyan Era.

Recently (2011) a lorry stuck this ambalama damaging the pillars and the roof. Currently, a temporary pillar has been kept to keep the roof from falling but is in need of a permanent solution.

update (2013) : This damage has been repaired and the Ambalama has been brought to the original condition
