Miyankulama Kal-Urumalai Archaeological Ruins

Located at the summit of Kal-Urumalai hillock in Miyankulama, this site contains ruins of three Early Anuradhapura-period structures positioned roughly 10 meters apart. The mound-like monuments and scattered stone slabs have been severely damaged by treasure hunters, making their original function uncertain.

The Kal-Urumalai Archaeological Ruins are located in Miyankulama village, within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Perillaveli (209), in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōralai Pattu South (Kiran).

Access Route

From Kiran Junction, travel along Kulavadi Road, located to the left of Pulipanchakal Junction, to Anjanakatte (5th Post) Junction, and continue to Kudumbimalai Junction. Near the Army Memorial, turn onto Sinnamiyankulam Road and proceed for approximately 2 km to reach the Pillaiyar Kovil. From there, continue for about 300 meters, then travel approximately 1.5 km along the road passing through the teak forest. After crossing a stream, walk approximately 1.5 km into the jungle to reach the site.

Historical Background

Based on the structural characteristics of the ruined monuments and the scattered archaeological artifacts, the site provides evidence of buildings dating to the Early Anuradhapura period.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

The site contains evidence of ancient structures constructed around a flat rock surface located at the summit of the Kal-Urumalai hillock. Three sites with some form of structures can be identified there, positioned approximately 10 meters apart.

The structures appear in the form of mounds, with stone flakes scattered around them at various locations. All three monuments have been severely damaged as a result of the activities of treasure hunters. Due to the limited archaeological evidence remaining on the ground surface, it is not possible to determine the original function of these structures with certainty.
