Miyankulama Kal-Urumalai Stupa Mound Ruins in Kiran (මියන්කුලම කල්ඌරුමලෛ පුරාවිද්‍යා නටබුන්)

Located 500 meters west of Kal-Urumalai rock in Miyankulama, this site features an Anuradhapura-period stupa mound with remains of a southern staircase. Nearby lies a stone-paved pethmaga (pathway), indicating the former presence of a small Buddhist monastery.

The Miyankulama Kal-Urumalai Stupa Mound Ruins are located in Miyankulama village, within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Perillaveli (209), in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōralai Pattu South (Kiran).

Access Route

From Kiran Junction, travel along Kulavadi Road, located to the left of Pulipanchakal Junction, and continue to Anjanakatte (5th Milepost) Junction. Proceed to Kudumbimalai Junction and turn left onto Miyankulama Road. Travel approximately 2 km along this road, then turn onto the road on the left and continue for another 2 km. From there, walk approximately 500 metres into the jungle on the right to reach the site.

Historical Background

Based on the archaeological evidence present at the site, the remains can be identified as those of a stupa possessing architectural features similar to constructions of the Anuradhapura period.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

The ruins are located approximately 500 meters west of the rock formation known as Kal-Urumalai. The remains can be identified as those of a stupa, which survives in the form of a mound. Evidence of a staircase belonging to the southern entrance of the stupa is also present.

Approximately 50 metres northeast of the stupa mound is a pethmaga (path) constructed with a laid stone paving. The archaeological evidence suggests that a small Buddhist monastery once existed at this location.
