Kamburupitiya Ransegoda Purana Tampita Viharaya

Kamburupitiya Ransegoda (Ranchagoda) Purana Viharaya is an ancient temple with a Tampita Viharaya built during the Kandyan era. This temple lies between Makandura and Kamburupitiya, 5 km off Kamburupitiya town, 3.5 km off Makandura and 24 km from Matara.

To reach Kamburupitiya Ransegoda (Ranchagoda) Ancient Temple from Matara take the Thihagoda road and travel 18 km to Kamburupitiya. From Kamburupitiya take the Makandura road for 5.3 km to reach the temple.

A Tampita Viharaya is a special building constructed on a wooden platform supported by several stone stumps, typically around 3 to 4 feet tall. Its roof is supported by a timber frame, and the walls are often made of wattle and daub, a mixture of woven branches and clay. Inside, the chamber walls are usually adorned with paintings, often in the Kandyan style, depicting religious themes and stories.

According to tradition, King Dappula (659-659) of the Anuradhapura kingdom had built a stupa here enshrining a stupa made of Gold this this area was known as Ran-Se-Goda. According to records in the temple, the current temple was built around 1715.

The temple’s image house is two stories but the new paintings have been drawn over the original murals destroying its antiquity. Another archaeologically valuable artefact found close to the temple is a 6×4-inch wooden board with a finely carved sketch of a 3-storied palace.

This Temple is listed have a Tampita Viharaya is in the “Sri Lankawe Tampita Vihara” book by Kusumsiri Wijayawardhana. No further information on a Tampita Viharaya at this temple is available.
