Hulannuge Kandahindagama Archaeological Site (හුලංනුගේ කඳහිඳගම පුරාවිද්‍යා භූමිය)

A hillock with ruins of an ancient stupa, granite pillars, stone slabs, remains of buildings, steps cut in the living rock in the village known as  Kandahindagama in Hulannuge on border of Monaragala and Ampara Districts has been declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“Buddhist Monastery complex with hillock covering chaitya, teras walls, brick mounds, rock cut line in the natural rock and stairways in 16th Milepost Kandahindagama village belonging to Grama Niladhari Division No. PP 12 Hulannuge West, in Divisional Secretary’s Division Lahugala in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 06º 90573′ N and longitude 081º 64342′ E).”

Another protected archaeological site with ancient granite pillars and stone slabs in the area known as the Hedaoya Yaya in Nugawela village. Based the GPS coordinates given in the gazette, this site too lies on the same route passing the Kandahindagama site in the middle of paddy fields (see map below and zoom out to see the location). This site is described in the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014 as follows ;

“The site with hillocks covered by stone pillars and stone plates situated in the area called “Hedaoya yaya” in Nugewewa village in Hulannuge Kandahindagama Grama Niladari Division in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Lahugala in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 06º 89592′ N and longitude 081º 64335′ E).”

GPS locations are marked based on the above description. However it is recommended to get more information and directions before attempting to visit the place.
