
Kekunadola Rajamaha Viharaya (Parathiraja Pirivena) is the temple which you could find a Tampita Viharaya in the Kalutara district. This temple lies on a small hillock on the Agalawatta – Ingiriya road close to the Agalawatta town.
This temple is said to built during the reign of king Parakramabahu VI (1411-1463). During younger days Buwanekabahu VI was known as Sapumal, a worrier prince who attacked Jaffna and brought it under the control of Kotte kingdom during the reign of king Parakramabahu VI. During this battle he was supported by a cousin called Sri Wardhana who later became to known as Sri Wardhana Prathiraja. It is said that he built a new temple Nugegoda and stupas at Kotte Rajamaha Viharaya and Agalawatta Kekunadola Viharaya. The current stupa and the Tampita Viharaya is believed to be the structures built by him. An statue of Sri Wardhana Prathiraja can be seen in the image house of the temple.
The Tampita Viharaya of Kekunadola Rajamaha Viharaya is built on 9 granite pillars. The structure is 18 feet 3 inches wide and 16 feet 10 inches long. The walls of inner chamber is 6 feet 9 inches tall. The roof is tiled with flat clay tiles typical of the era. In addition to this building, the Wahalkada, stupa and the image house are of historical interest.
From Agalawatta junction take road towards Ingiriya. The temple lies 500 meter down this road facing a paddy field on a small hillock.
