The site near Kokuvil Tamil School in Mankerni indicates an Anuradhapura-era complex of significant size now disappeared forever. With new residential developments, the site has been completely bulldozed and destroyed, leaving only stone pillar bases scattered around various gardens.

The archaeological site near Kokuvil Tamil School, located in Deveni Kanuwa (2nd Post) within the Mankerni Central 211 Grama Niladhari Division of Korale Pattu North (Vakare) Divisional Secretariat, preserves scattered remains of an ancient building dating to the Anuradhapura Era. Although the original building has been destroyed, displaced archaeological materials found across the surrounding area indicate the former existence of a substantial ancient construction at the site.

Access Route

When traveling from Vakare town toward Batticaloa along the main A15 road, turn right near the 52 km (32.3 miles) kilometer post opposite the Navy camp onto the Mankerni Road. Continue for approximately 1.8 km (1.12 miles) to reach Kokuvil Tamil School, near which the archaeological site is located.

Historical Background

All archaeological evidence identified at this location consists of artifacts that have been displaced from their original positions. Still, the architectural characteristics of the surviving remains correspond closely with construction styles associated with the Anuradhapura Era.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

The site appears to have suffered extensive destruction due to modern residential construction carried out in the surrounding lands. As a result, large quantities of ancient bricks, roof tile fragments, and pottery sherds are now scattered across the area.

Numerous stone pillar bases and stone fragments that had been removed from their original positions using heavy machinery can also be observed scattered throughout the site.

In adjacent properties, approximately nine additional stone fragments and pillar bases of similar dimensions have been identified.

Geographical Coordinates

The exact location of the site is as follows:

North Latitude: 8°02′42.4″ N
East Longitude: 81°26′41.9″ E
