The Madurankeni paddy field ruins near Kunjankulam are an Anuradhapura-era site featuring an intact foundation of a small ancient structure. Located within a highly developed agricultural landscape, the survival of these foundation pillars offers clear evidence of early historical settlements tied to local water and farming systems.
The ruins of a building with stone pillars located in the Madurankeni paddy fields at Kunjankulam, within the Madurankernikulam 211-B Grama Niladhari Division of Korale Pattu North (Vakare), are ancient structures dating to the Anuradhapura Era.
Access Route
From Vakare, travel along the Batticaloa (A15) Road until reaching the 52 km (32.3 miles) kilometre post. From there, proceed approximately 3.8 km (2.36 miles) along the Madurankeni Road situated on the right-hand side opposite the Navy Headquarters. The ruins are located about 100 m (328 feet) to the right of this road within a paddy field.
Archaeological Remains
The surrounding area has now been converted into cultivated agricultural land. Within this landscape, the remains of a building constructed using roughly hewn stone pillars can still be identified. These pillars measure approximately 50 cm (19.7 inches) in height and appear to have formed part of an ancient structural foundation.
Twelve stone pillar stumps remain in their original positions and have not yet been subjected to significant destruction, preserving valuable evidence of the original layout of the structure.
