Travelling from Bakamuna towards Minneriya along the Elahera Yodha Ela for 5.3 kilometers, you will come across a large Bo tree with sprawling branches arching over the road. This ancient Bodhi tree, known as the Kottapitiya Ancient Bodhi Tree, takes its name from the nearby village.
Unfortunately, the history of this sacred tree is not known. Beneath it lies the ruin of an ancient image house, conserved by the Department of Archaeology. The structure was built on a raised brick platform using 11 large stone pillars, of which 10 full-height pillars still stand around the conserved shrine.
Inside the image house are two statue bases, which are believed to have once supported standing Buddha statues in ancient times. At the entrance lies a plain moonstone, adding to the quiet simplicity of this forgotten Buddhist site.
