While there are several locations in Sri Lanka called Bambarabedda (or Bambaragala), the one discussed here is different from the well-known site near Teldeniya. This Bambarabedda is located approximately 175 km north of Teldeniya, deep within the Kuchchaveli forest, an area known to be inhabited by elephants and bears.
Bambarabedda itself is a remarkable natural formation: a large vertical rock sits atop a rock slab, and on top of that, another vertical rock is balanced. When viewed from a specific angle, this striking natural arrangement appears to resemble a standing statue of the Buddha. The name Bambarabedda likely originates from the large beehives (bambara wada) that are still found on the rock today.
Given the awe-inspiring nature of this location, it is understandable that people chose to establish a Buddhist monastery here in ancient times. However, today the area is a dense forest teeming with wildlife. Reaching it is highly difficult, as there are no roads. The only way to access it is by boat, crossing the Pankulama Aru river near the Salpayaru bridge on the Pulmoddai road.
At Bambarabedda, key archaeological features include a large cave carved into the rock. The drip-ledge of this cave bears two inscriptions written in ancient script. Notably, the unique natural rock formation (the “natural Buddha statue”) is situated on top of the very rock containing this cave. Currently, most of the caves here have been adapted and converted into dwelling/meditation spaces for meditating monks.
Located about 2 km further into the forest from Bambarabedda is Debaragala Forest Monastery (Wanasenasanaya). The only access route is a footpath leading through the wildlife-inhabited forest from Bambarabedda. Similar to Bambarabedda, meditation cells have been created inside rock caves here to accommodate meditating monks.
These two sites represent ancient monastic landscapes preserved within a currently wild and challenging environment, still serving as retreats for Buddhist monks today.
