Kudagalgamuwa Purana Viharaya

Nestled amid the serene countryside near Kurunegala, Kudagalgamuwa Purana Viharaya preserves a beautifully crafted Tampita Viharaya from the Kandyan era. Elevated on stone pillars, this sacred shrine still displays intricate murals, statues of deities, and a painted canopy depicting the Suvisi Vivaranaya, echoing timeless devotion.

Nestled in a quiet village about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from Kurunegala, Kudagalgamuwa Purana Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple that preserves the grace of the Kandyan era. The temple is located about 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) off the Kurunegala–Puttalam Road. Travelers can reach it by taking the Puttalam road up to Gonagama Junction and turning towards Thittawela to reach this tranquil heritage site.

The Tampita Viharaya

The temple’s most striking feature is its Tampita Viharaya—a distinctive architectural style of the Kandyan period. This shrine is built on a raised wooden platform supported by stone pillars, each about 0.9–1.2 meters (3–4 feet) high. The structure’s timber-framed roof shelters wattle-and-daub walls, which are adorned with finely detailed murals painted in the traditional Kandyan style.

Inside the image house, a serene seated Buddha statue occupies the central position, flanked by two standing Buddha images. On either side, figures of deities Vishnu and Natha are placed, completing the spiritual composition. The painted canopy above depicts the Suvisi Vivaranaya—the twenty-four previous Buddhas’ declarations foretelling the enlightenment of Gautama Buddha.

Architectural Features

The temple complex is enclosed by a short wall and features a circumambulatory path lined with long windows that allow soft light to filter through. The entrance to the temple is crowned with an intricately carved Makara Pandal, while two clay Naga guardian figures with three serpent heads each stand watch on either side. The walls are built of mud bricks, and the roof is covered with traditional Sinhala clay tiles, reflecting the craftsmanship of the Kandyan era.

Heritage Recognition

In recognition of its historical and cultural value, the Tampita Viharaya at Kudagalgamuwa Purana Viharaya was declared a protected archaeological monument in the government gazette dated 25 April 1980.
