Kushtaraja gala statue

The Kushtaraja Gala in Weligama is a magnificent 7th–9th century Mahayana relief carved into solid rock. While folklore attributes it to a king cured of leprosy, scholars identify the figure as the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, a compassionate healer. It remains the wet zone’s only well-preserved monument of its kind.

The Kushtaraja Gala statue at Weligama is located along the old main road that passes through Weligama town, approximately 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles) from Matara. When approaching from Galle, access is gained by turning onto the old road just before reaching Ahangama, crossing the railway track. This turnoff lies near the Weligala Bay Rest House. The sculpture can be seen on the right-hand side just before the second railway crossing. The statue forms part of the Kushtarajagala Viharaya complex.

Description and Artistic Significance

This more-than-life-sized relief, carved directly into a solid rock face, is regarded as one of the finest examples of Mahayana Buddhist sculpture in Sri Lanka. Although its exact origin remains uncertain, it is generally believed to date between the 7th and 9th centuries CE.

Folklore and Legendary Accounts

One popular tradition recounts that a foreign king afflicted with a severe skin disease—referred to as kushta (leprosy)—arrived at Weligama Bay and was treated by a local physician. Upon regaining his health, the king is said to have commissioned a statue in remembrance, leading to the name Kushta Raja Gala, meaning the rock of the Kushta King. However, it has been argued that if this account were accurate, the king might have instead honored the healer rather than himself.

Another version of the story suggests that the ailing king made a vow to a deity during his illness and, after being cured, commissioned the statue as an offering to that deity.

These traditions may hold some plausibility, as Weligama was a prosperous urban center in ancient times and an important hub of foreign trade, serving as a harbor for overseas merchants.

Scholarly Interpretations

Scholars generally identify the figure not as a king, but as a Bodhisattva—a being destined to attain Buddhahood in a future life—or possibly a deity. The most widely accepted interpretation is that the statue represents Avalokiteshvara, also known as Awalokitha, a prominent bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism.

This identification is supported by iconographic features such as the presence of four meditating Buddha figures on the headdress and the lotus held in the hand. Avalokiteshvara is revered as a compassionate and powerful healer, a detail that aligns intriguingly with the healing-related folklore associated with the statue.

Comparative and Religious Context

A comparable rock relief can be observed at Buduruwagala in the Wellawaya area. Some interpretations also suggest that the statue may represent the deity Natha, a figure venerated in Sri Lanka. It is believed in certain traditions that Avalokiteshvara manifested in multiple forms within the island, with Natha being one such manifestation. If so, both identities may refer to the same spiritual figure.

Cultural Continuity

Regardless of its precise identification, the Kushtaraja Gala statue remains a unique and significant monument. It is the only well-preserved statue of its kind in the wet zone of Sri Lanka. Even today, devotees visit the site to offer prayers, particularly seeking relief from illnesses, continuing a long-standing tradition associated with healing and spiritual protection.
