There had been an ancient jungle path between the Namal Pokuna Monastery and the primary Dimbulagala Monastery which even today the locals know of. Between these two monasteries lies a cave which is said to being the adobe of Dimbulagala Maha Kashyapa Thero who had held the position of Maha Swami, the highest position of the order of the Sangha.

There are some information on some of the historical chronicles of senior posts of priesthood given to the Buddhist monks of Sri Lanka. The highest order was called Maha Sawami or Ma Himi or Sangharaja during different periods.

Maha Kashyapa Thero who lived in Dimbulagala (Udumbara Giri Temple) during the period of Polonnaruwa kingdom, Sangharakkhita and Medhankara Theros during the Dambadeniya period, Devarakkhitha Thero during the Gampola period, Keragala Wanaratana and Thotagamuwe Sri Rahula Thero during the Kotte period, and Weliwita Saranankara Thero during the Kandy period are some the most honorable theros who had carried this most senior post.

During the period of King Parakramabahu I (1153-1186) whose main goal was to reorganize, reform and unify the Sangha.[An inscription at Gal Vihara states that with Maha Kashyapa’s advice, the council expelled hundreds of corrupt monks and unified the Sangha under one single monastic Nikaya, the Mahavihara sect. Maha Kashyapa Thero had also wrote several works on Vinaya.
