Mahakandura Ella Falls (මහකඳුර ඇල්ල)

Mahakandura Ella waterfall lies 42-43 kms from Kandy in Padiyapelella on the Kandy – Rikillagaskada – Walapane road.

Eberhard Kautzsch in his publication “A Guide to the Waterfall of Sri Lanka” published in 1983 describes the falls as ;

“Close to Padiyapelella on the Ragalla-Kandy road (B-39) and near the junction to Ellamulle (Mile-post 25/26) a 120 m waterfall plunges over several cascades into the depths. The road crosses this fall twice by a hair-pin bend. During the rainy season the waters spread over the rocks like a big piece of white tulle. The small stream (Bodi Ella) rises from Katukelle estate (1200 m NN). Off the lower third of the fall an irrigation channel has been built in 1888.”

The LCWF database basically repeats the same information but provides the height as 102m probably by mistake.  “The 102m Mahakandura Ella Falls is served by water from the Katukelle Estate (1200m). Below the fall is a canal network, constructed in 1888. Take the Ragala – Kandy road for about 42km. The fall is located between the 25th and 26th mile posts. The nearest town is Hanguranketha, and the Hanguranketha rest-house is 13 km away.”
